As home to many nationalities from all over the world, The UAE provides a variety of educational options for children of residents. Education is compulsory for Emirati children from the age of 6. Though based on the recent results majority of education is provided by private schools, public schools are also having a fair share in the education system of the UAE.

The UAE schools generally have four levels:

  • Early Childhood Education (ages 3–5)
  • Pre-school education (ages 6–10)
  • Primary education (ages 11-13)
  • Secondary education (ages 14–18)

Nurseries in the UAE

Nursery provision in the UAE provides an overwhelming choice of curricula, languages, and locations. Nurseries in the UAE offer early childhood education for children between 6 months to 5 years. Various international nursery chains are operating all over the UAE with locations in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, and more.

Pre-school education in the UAE

Pre-school education in the UAE is usually co-educational. Children between the ages of three and five can attend pre-school education. Many schools provide K-12 education, which means that students may never need to change their schools.

Primary education in UAE

Primary education in the UAE has 5 grades. Math, Science, English and/or Arabic, and Social Studies are among the topics in which students should excel. Public schools employ a trimester system, whereas private schools often use the common two-semester approach. However, both systems offer a winter holiday in December, a spring break, and 7 weeks of summer break. The UAE's educational quality is steadily improving, and 16 alternative curricula (including American, British, Canadian, French, German, Indian) are now available from internationally renowned operators.

Secondary education in the UAE

Emiratis must attend secondary school until they graduate, and the country has a roughly 97% graduation rate. Secondary school students enjoy some levels of flexibility in choosing subjects they’re passionate about. In public schools, students have the option of enrolling in a technical secondary school or continuing on an academic path. Like everything else, the UAE enjoys a diverse teaching workforce that suits various programs. India, the UK, Egypt, the Philippines, and Ireland are the top five nationalities of the educational workforce in the UAE schools.

Higher education in the UAE

The UAE has an excellent and diverse higher education system. The country is home to a wide range of private and public universities. Three Emirati universities are among the top 500 universities in the world. UAE higher education institutions can be divided into three categories: Public, Private, and Global Partnerships. Government institutions are free for Emiratis. As per the statics in the final year of secondary school, 95% of all girls and 80% of all boys apply for admission to a higher education institution.

Public institutions in the UAE include:

  • UAE University (UAEU)
  • Zayed University
  • Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT)

Private institutions are playing an important role in the education system of the UAE. A high percentage of students in the UAE are enrolled in private schools, as per the research 50% of all students are in private institutions in Dubai and 40% in Abu Dhabi. Dubai Knowledge Village and Academic City are hosting a good number of campuses and programs of famous international universities. The list includes Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health and The Sorbonne.
